Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) a substance by-product of blood (plasma) that has an abundance of platelets. Until recently, its use has been confined to formal hospital settings. This was due mainly to the cost of separating the platelets from the blood (thousands) and a large amount of blood needed (one unit) to produce a suitable quantity of platelets. Our surgeon can, with the assistance of technicians, harvest and produce enough platelets from a small amount of blood drawn from the patient while they are having outpatient oral surgery in our office.

ADVANTAGES OF PRP

PRP permits accelerated healing. Platelets perform many functions, including the formation of a blood clot and release of growth factors (GF) into the wound. These GF (platelet derived growth factors PGDF, transforming growth factor beta TGF, and insulin-like growth factor ILGF) function to assist the body in repairing itself by stimulating stem cells to regenerate new tissue. The more growth factors released sequestered into the wound; the more stem cells stimulated to produce new host tissue.

A subfamily of (Transforming Growth Factor) TGF, is bone morphogenic protein (BMP). BMP has been shown to initiate the formation of regenerative bone. This can help the oral and maxillofacial surgeon who places dental implants or engages in facial reconstructive procedures. By adding PRP to the surgical site with bone grafting materials, our surgeon can now grow bone more precisely and faster.

PRP'S CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

Bone grafting for dental implants and facial reconstructive procedures. This includes bone grafts, sinus lift procedures, and dentoalveolar ridge augmentation procedures. Repair of bone defects creating by removal of teeth or small cysts. Repair of fistulas between the sinus cavity and mouth.

There are very few contraindications for the use of PRP. patients with bleeding abnormalities or blood diseases do not qualify for our in-office procedure. Check with Dr. Matthew Hilmi or your primary care physician to determine if Platelet Rich Plasma is right for your case.
